
This webinar offers a mix of topics related to preparing your career path, including what employers seek and how to develop those skills. Speakers will address the benefits and significance of volunteer and community-based opportunities, such as building your professional skill set and broadening your connections. There will be a discussion on how to initiate and maintain participation in professional organizations and how to maintain your career trajectory once you have landed an entry-level position.
These topics are relevant not only to rising professionals, but to mid-career professionals already working in the field. Some topics include being available to others through mentoring, active involvement in volunteer opportunities, enriching community experiences, and participating in conferences and training sessions. One further consideration is managing your own expectations for your career and being proactive in getting there.

John Esson is the Director of the Environmental Career Center and Partners Achieving Sustainability Excellence Corps (PASEcorps.org). He also served as president of the ECW Environmental Group. John is an environmental careers leader having established the Environmental Career Center (ECC) in 1980. ECC operates EnvironmentalCareer.com, conducts environmental careers research, provides environmental careers coaching, operates environmental intern programs for employers, published the Green Careers Journal, and conducts environmental career seminars including many sessions at National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) annual conferences since 1995. John has 30 years of sustainability, ecological and the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) experience with federal, state, and local agencies and consulting companies. He has a bachelor’s degree in Wildlife Ecology from the University of Minnesota and graduate studies in Wildlife Biology at the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. He led the NAEP Career Development Committee and Subcommittee for seven years.
Marie is principal and owner of Sapphos Environmental, Inc. She is an environmental compliance specialist with more than 35 years of experience in managing public- and private-sector projects that require strategic planning, environmental compliance documentation, and resource management. She is recognized by the Los Angeles Bar Association as an expert on the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA). She has extensive experience with environmental compliance documentation for capital improvement projects for transportation, energy, recreation, health care, and water. She has served as a strategic environmental advisor on the Los Angeles International Airport Master Plan and subsequent improvements, China Shipping Yard, and the Los Angeles County Drainage Area. She served as the project manager for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Medical Campus and Long Beach Memorial Master Plan. She has overseen the entitlement and environmental analysis and permitting for over 3,000 megawatts of renewable and conventional energy projects and transmission facilities in the western United States. Marie is a 30-year member of National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) and the California AEP. She currently serves as President of NAEP and Chapter Director representing Los Angeles on the California AEP Board of Directors.
Charlie Venuto is the Director of Environmental, Health and Safety for Delaware North Parks and Resorts (DNPR) at the Kennedy Space Center Visitors Complex. DNPR operates the complex for NASA, which is located in the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, mandating an extra level of environmental protection. DNPR is certified to the ISO 14001 standard. He has also worked for Siemens Wind Power based out of Orlando as an EHS Specialist. Charlie supported EHS programs at several factory locations and was part of the team that achieved ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 certification at a new wind turbine blade factory in Ontario, Canada. Prior to joining Siemens in 2011, he was the Environmental Manager for the contractor responsible for assembling, maintaining and launching the Space Shuttle, working for the program for over 30 years, developing policies and procedures for environmental compliance and operational excellence. Mr. Venuto has taught at American Public University System (APUS) since 2010. He has also taught environmental science and biology courses at Brevard Community College. He earned advanced degrees in Environmental Science and as an Educational Specialist from the Florida Institute of Technology. He also earned an MS in Environmental Policy from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. He is a Certified Hazardous Materials Manager.
Leslie is a Certified Environmental Professional (CEP) through the Academy of Board Certified Environmental Professionals with over 19 years of experience in environmental impact assessment. She is the Environmental Science Business Class Leader for HDR for Northern California. In this role she manages the environmental team across all business sectors to optimize technical, commercial and operational performance. She manages National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA), California Environmental Quality Act (CEQA), and other state environmental reviews. Her experience includes impact analysis and regulatory review specializing in project development, alternative analysis, and various resource areas, public involvement, agency coordination and consultation, cumulative impact analysis, and negotiating the NEPA, state policy, and regulatory processes. Her experience offers a broad geographical reach, a wide technical basis for the types of projects and resource focuses, and a versatile client portfolio. Leslie has grown her National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) involvement starting on the board of the Hawaii AEP before moving to California AEP and now serves as an elected board member for NAEP and the Membership Committee Chair.
National Association of Environmental Professionals (NAEP) and American Public University (APU) have shared efforts through an educational alliance with the goal to help prepare environmental professionals to advance in their field through career-relevant education. With this goal in mind, NAEP and American Public University leaders are collaborating on a fourth year of webcast series focused on career preparation and professional development for environmental professionals.
